How to fit a motorcycle helmetUpdated an hour ago
A helmet only protects you properly if it fits properly. Fit should always come before looks.
1. Measure your head
Use a soft tape measure around the widest part of your head, about 2.5cm above your eyebrows and just above your ears. Compare it with that helmet's size chart, because sizing differs between brands and models.
2. Check the fit
- It should go on with a little effort, sitting snug over your brow and crown without pain.
- Rock it side to side and front to back. There should be little to no movement.
- You shouldn't be able to fit your fingers between your forehead and the padding.
- The cheek pads should stay in firm contact with your cheeks. Squished cheeks are normal, and the pads relax over time.
- With the strap done up, try rolling it forward off your head. If it starts to come off, try a smaller size.
- Wear it for 10–15 minutes to check for pressure points.
3. Head shape matters
Helmets come in round, intermediate oval and long oval shapes. If a size feels right but you get pressure points, try a different brand or model.
Other tips
- Don't buy a used helmet, because damage inside may not be visible.
- Glasses wearers: choose a helmet that fits your glasses comfortably.
- Remove earrings before putting your helmet on, and remove makeup before trying helmets on so you don't stain the cheek pads.
- Keep all tags and stickers on until you're sure it fits.
