Every tyre is a compromise, so the right choice depends on the terrain you actually ride.

Knobby tyres

Built for maximum grip off-road, with tall tread blocks that bite into mud, sand and loose dirt. They suit riders doing roughly 80% off-road. Trade-off: they're noisier on the highway, wear faster on bitumen, and feel different in paved corners.

50/50 tyres

The all-rounder: confident on the highway and capable on gravel roads, fire trails and moderate terrain. They suit riders who do a real mix of tarmac and dirt. Trade-off: they won't match a full knobby in deep mud or a road tyre on slick surfaces.

Be honest about where you ride. The best tyre on your mate's bike isn't automatically the best one for you.
