Tips for beginner adventure ridersUpdated an hour ago
- Gear up: invest in the best helmet, jacket, pants and goggles you can afford. Choose less bulky gloves, as you'll use the clutch and brake more off-road.
- Start small: a lighter bike is easier to handle and more forgiving while you learn clutch, throttle, braking and body position on the dirt.
- Know the styles: adventure bikes blend on and off-road riding, dual sport bikes are more dirt-focused, and dirt bikes are off-road only.
- Body position: practise standing on the pegs while riding, braking and shifting. An adventure riding course is well worth it.
- Plan your ride: choose a route that suits your skill level, let people know where you're going, and check the weather.
- Be prepared: carry a tyre repair kit, multi-tool, first-aid kit and plenty of water, and learn basic bike maintenance.
